State of the Judiciary address available online
Chief Justice Jean H. Toal delivered her State of the Judiciary address to the General Assembly on Wednesday. The speech was broadcast live on the Internet and has been archived, along with the PowerPoint presentation, on the

Nichols appointed to Commission on Indigent Defense
Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed John S. Nichols to the Commission on Indigent Defense for a term expiring June 30, 2013. 

Court form revisions posted
The S.C. Judicial Department has revised the following forms to substitute "intellectual disability" for "mental retardation": Form SCCA 221, Order for Competency to Stand Trial Evaluation Pursuant to State v. Blair and Form SCCA 222, Order for Criminal Responsibility and Capacity to Conform Evaluation. To view the complete order, click

Nominations sought for 2012 Distinguished Lawyer Award
The Employment and Labor Law Section will honor an individual nominated by his/her professional peers for meritorious service to employment and labor law practice in South Carolina. The 2012 recipient will be recognized at the Section mid-year seminar, scheduled for May 18, 2012, at the Bar Conference Center in Columbia. Click

Bar Foundation holds most successful gala ever!

Library series to discuss "Operation Jackpot"
The Southern Writer Series at the Richland County Public Library is hosting a panel discussion featuring Jason Ryan, author of Jackpot: High Times, High Seas and the Sting That Launched the War on Drugs, on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. The discussion will explore Operation Jackpot, a federal drug task force created by U.S. Attorney Henry McMaster in the 1980s that captured and convicted the infamous "gentleman smugglers" of the lowcountry. Joining the panel discussion will be Bob Jendron, Assistant U.S. Attorney; Bart Daniel, former U.S. Attorney; Jack Swerling, defense attorney; and Robert Stewart, former Chief of SLED, all of whom worked on the case.
