Beware of scam attempts
Bar members should continue to be vigilant for scams involving a person claiming to be an attorney from another state and a counterfeit South Carolina “settlement” check. The scams usually involve a legitimate S.C. business and e-mail routed to a legitimate-looking, but phony e-mail address. If there is any question about someone claiming to be licensed in another state, check the state’s Bar website to confirm their membership. Bar members are also advised that any electronic message containing information about a “wire” from the S.C. Bar is bogus.

Advance Sheet update
January 3, 2012
In this appeal of a dismissal, the S.C. Supreme Court held that S.C. Code Ann. Section 9-11-90 provides a basis to assert a property interest. Therefore, the appellants asserted a cognizable property interest rooted in state law sufficient to survive the motion to dismiss. The Court also held that the trial court erred in dismissing the appellants' unlawful takings claim. The matter was reversed and remanded.
