Johnsonville Middle wins state mock trial competition

December 13, 2011

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Dec. 12, 2011) – Johnsonville Middle School won the S.C. Bar Middle School Mock Trial State Competition on Saturday, Dec. 10, making this the third time the school has taken home the state title. The previous wins occurred in 2004 and 2005. Forestbrook Middle School was named runner-up.

Participating students included Preston Cook, Ansley Eaddy, Austin Eaddy, Sara Graham, Breelyn Hannah, Griffith Hill, Amber Huggins, Heather Huggins, Briley Lawrimore, Ethan Powell, Madison Wall, Zachary Wall and Tanner Wise. The teacher coach was Donna L. Graham, and the attorney coach was Holly H. Wall.

Students presented the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. Additionally, students filled the roles of defendant, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers. Each team was judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

This year’s fictitious criminal case was State of South Carolina v. Drew DeLaney. DeLaney, a high school track coach, was charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of one of the team’s top runners, who collapsed after a strenuous practice on one of the hottest days of the year. The prosecution and defense had different explanations for the cause of death. For more information about the case or the Middle School Mock Trial Program, visit

The S.C. Bar thanks the attorney volunteers as well as the staff at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center, Lexington County Magistrate Court, Lexington Sheriff's Department and Lexington Police Department, whose contributions helped make this competition a success.

The mock trial program is sponsored by the S.C. Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Division, which was developed in 1976 to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education.

The mock trial program is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the S.C. Bar Foundation and the S.C. Bar.

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 14,000 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
