Judicial Merit Selection Commission announces nominations
The Judicial Merit Selection Commission found the following candidates qualified and nominated at the hearing on Nov. 15, 2011: Supreme Court, Seat 4, Hon. Board of Governors meets
The Board of Governors met today at the Bar building.
The Board received two requests from the Family Law Section to address pending legislation. The Board voted to recommend that H.4095 (regarding joint legal custody) be sent back to the legislative committee for further study. The Board voted to oppose as drafted H.3225 (giving custody priority to grandparents or other immediate family members, except over parents) as the best interest of the child should remain paramount.
The Board voted to discontinue CLE publication invoicing to non-Bar members.
The Board adopted a resolution recognizing Sen. Lindsey Graham’s commitment to the legal profession.
Matthew V. Creech, Lucy L. McDow and Lisa Lee Smith were nominated to serve on the Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection Committee.
G. Dewey Oxner Jr. and Jack B. Swerling were nominated for reappointment to the Chief Justice’s Commission on the Profession.
Stacey Haynes was elected to a vacancy in the House of Delegates for the Fifth Judicial Circuit.
John Nichols was nominated for appointment to the S.C. Commission on Indigent Defense.
The Board received reports from the Bar Foundation and the Lawyer Image and Member Involvement Task Forces. The Board approved conceptually the creation of a law student division or affiliation as proposed by the Member Involvement Task Force. The proposal will go to the House of Delegates in January. The Board also received a report from Board members who met with members of the Newberry County Bar.

Court issues order requiring Bar members to register with AIS
The Supreme Court issued an order requiring all South Carolina lawyers to log on to the new SCJD Attorney Information System (AIS) to validate their contact information by tomorrow, November 18. Each attorney has a unique account that is password protected and was mailed a personalized letter from Chief Justice Toal dated October 17, 2011, that contains the specific logon procedures. Please note that attorneys will be unable to renew their 2012 South Carolina Bar license without first validating their contact information in AIS at the Supreme Court. To view the complete order, click 

S.C. Commission on Indigent Defense seeking candidates
Candidates seeking to apply for a four-year term as the Circuit Public Defender of the 10th Judicial Circuit should go to to complete an online application and receive further details.
