Recertification applications for mediators and arbitrators due December 31

ADR recertification applications were mailed early this month. Applications and accompanying fees are due no later than December 31. To avoid late fees or loss of certification, all neutrals with active certificates issued before October 1, must return the application postmarked no later than Friday, December 31. Be sure to include pages two through four, a signature and a $50 fee for each certificate. Fees paid after December 31 must be accompanied by a late penalty of $50 per certificate. Any fees unpaid after January 15, 2011, will result in loss of certification. To verify your certification status, or if you have questions, contact Joan Brown at (803) 576-3794 or at jbrown@scbar.org.

The Bar's Pro Bono Committee is seeking nominations for the 2011 Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year. Nominations are due by December 15. The award will be presented at the S.C. Bar Foundation Gala in March. To nominate an attorney or a law firm, complete the application and return to the S.C. Bar Pro Bono Program by December 15.

Casemaker makes the case!
Lawyers who learned to do legal research using books instead of electronics will love the browse feature in Casemaker. Browse is most useful for finding code sections and ethics or attorney general opinions by number. For example, in the South Carolina library, choose the code, then click the browse button above the search options on the left hand side. This will take you to a view similar to the code index; scroll down the list of titles and click. This is also useful when you are having trouble finding something by key words. Instead of trying to predict the exact code language, use browse. For assistance logging in to Casemaker, e-mail casemaker@scbar.org or call (803) 799-6653, ext. 183. Research assistance is also available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekly at 877-659-0801 (toll free).

Seminar location updates
The
Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill sites have been canceled for tomorrow's seminar From File to Trial: Eight Keys to Success in Court and Beyond. CLE-video sites are still available in Charleston, Florence, Greenville, Spartanburg (Wofford) and Greenwood. The Charleston site has been canceled for the Bankruptcy Practices in the District of South Carolina seminar on December 17.
