Spreading the mission of the Bar Foundation
Sharing success stories of our grantees is what keeps the Bar Foundation ticking! In the past few months, the Foundation has visited with the Columbia Lawyers Association, the S.C. Women Lawyers Association and the S.C. Defense Trial Attorneys Association. We’ve met with lawyers in Charleston, Columbia, Florence and Greenville and are looking for a time to come and speak to you! With just four percent of in-state Bar members making an annual gift to the Bar Foundation, we appreciate every opportunity to spread our mission to advance justice. If you are looking for a speaker or are interested in gathering with some colleagues to learn more about your Bar’s Foundation, contact Executive Director Shannon Willis Scruggs at

Advance Sheet update
October 17, 2012
In this appeal from a master's order invalidating a zoning ordinance in the City of Charleston, the S.C. Supreme Court reversed, finding that the ordinance did not constitute illegal spot zoning. Zoning ordinances are presumed valid and the person attacking one bears the burden of showing the zoning decision is arbitrary, unreasonable and unjust. The Court found that “respondents did not meet their heavy burden here.”
Historic Charleston Foundation and Preservation Soc'y of Charleston v. City of Charleston, No. 27181, is available

Justice Hearn dissented in a separate opinion in which Acting Justice Alexander Macaulay concurred.
