Application period open for Rule 608 civil case contracts
Attorneys interested in contracting with the S.C. Commission on Indigent Defense to provide representation for indigent clients in civil matters (post conviction relief and sexually violent predator actions included) are invited to submit applications for consideration. The link for the application and other documents concerning the civil case contract program is located on the front page of the SCCID website: www.sccid.sc.gov. All applications must be completed and received by SCCID no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2012. Questions regarding the application process should be directed to the Commission.
2013 Leadership Academy application period open
The Bar is accepting applications for the 2013 Leadership Academy. This fifth installment of the Academy will address the following topics: lawyers in public service, professionalism, career/leadership development, work-life balance, the path to the judiciary, pro bono and community service and service to the Bar. Sessions will take place on the following dates: Jan. 26-27 (at the close of Bar Convention–Myrtle Beach), Feb. 21 (Columbia), March 22 (Greenville), April 26 (Charleston) and May 16 (Charleston, Annual Meeting). The purpose of the Leadership Academy is to enhance the professional growth and leadership skills development of selected members to prepare them to make greater contributions to the legal profession and to the community. Interested applicants must meet and agree to the stated requirements and submit the required application and supporting documents by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Two lawyers join Bar Foundation Board
The S.C. Bar Foundation Board of Directors welcomes two new members: J. Boone Aiken III and Robin A. Braithwaite. The S.C. Supreme Court affirmed the circuit court’s order disqualifying the appellant from running in the primary election for Senate District 41. The Court held that the appellant, as a part-time prosecutor, did not qualify as an exempt candidate under Section 8-13-1356(B), and was therefore required to follow the filing requirements pursuant to said Section.

Justice Pleicones dissented in a separate opinion.
In this direct appeal arising out of a property dispute, the S.C. Court of Appeals affirmed the decision of the master-in-equity. The court found, inter alia, that when there is an absence of language regarding access to an easement, the master-in-equity is allowed to consider additional evidence beyond the easement conveyance documents.
