Board of Governors meets
The Board of Governors met January 19 in Columbia.

The Board ratified actions previously taken by the Executive Committee regarding a 2012 court appointment funding proposal and participation of Bar staff in county bar CLE programs.

The Board received as information a report from the Lawyer Image Task Force regarding plans to provide social media content to Bar members as a means of further promoting positive developments and images of the profession.

A request from the Member Involvement Task Force to conduct a member survey to assess barriers and incentives to Bar participation was approved.

The Board considered a request from the Senate Judiciary Committee for comment on S.1055, regarding composition of the Judicial Council.

Discussion was held on full publication of member contact information on the Bar website and in future editions of the Lawyers Desk Book. The Board approved disseminating a notification to Bar members regarding future publication.

The Board received a report on a meeting held with members of the Chester County Bar.

House of Delegates convenes in Columbia
The Bar's House of Delegates met January 19 during the Bar Convention. During the meeting, Bar President A. Marvin Quattlebaum Jr. reported on recent initiatives, citing work in the areas of lawyer image, Bar member involvement and member benefits, specifically in the area of technology. The House also received a report regarding proposed changes to Rule 410, SCACR, and reports from the S.C. Bar Foundation, USC School of Law and Charleston School of Law.

The House approved conceptually the creation of a law student affiliation as proposed by the Member Involvement Task Force.

The House approved a request from the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee to pursue additional strategies for the improved protection of the public from non-lawyers engaging in the unauthorized practice of law.

A request from the Probate, Estate Planning and Trust Section to approve proposed legislative amendments to the S.C. Probate Code was approved.

The following proposed rule changes received approval and will be forwarded to the S.C. Supreme Court: a proposal from the Practice and Procedure Committee amending Rule 6(e), SCRCP, to extend from five days to eight the time allotted for response to a notice served upon a party by mail; and a proposal from the Professional Responsibility Committee for amendments to Rule 1.5, SCRCP, regarding flat fee agreements.

J. Todd Hyche and Karen M. Tyner (Region I) and Michele Patrao Forsythe and James D. Myrick (Region IV) were nominated to the Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. The nominations will proceed to the Court.


Pro Bono Award winners to be honored at Foundation Gala
Louis T. Runge Jr. of Ellis, Lawhorne and Sims, PA in Columbia, Bradford T. Cunningham of the Town of Lexington and the firm of Sowell, Gray, Stepp and Laffitte, LLC in Columbia have been named the S.C. Bar 2012 Pro Bono Award winners for their contributions to meeting the civil legal needs of citizens who cannot afford the services of an attorney. The recipients will be recognized at the Bar Foundation Gala on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. For more information, click
