Judicial Merit Selection Commission releases report
The Judicial Merit Selection Commission has released its Draft Report of Fall 2011 Judicial Candidates. Members of the General Assembly are not permitted to issue letters of introduction, announcements of candidacy, statements detailing a candidate’s qualifications or commitments to vote for a candidate until Jan. 17, when the report becomes final. Luncheon with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justices Scalia and Breyer
Please note that a limited number of tickets are remaining for the Convention luncheon with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justices Scalia and Breyer taking place Saturday, Jan. 21, at noon. In order to purchase a ticket you must register for the Convention. You may purchase tickets at the Convention. No tickets will be sold after Friday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m.
Nominations sought for Young Lawyer of the Year Award
YLD is seeking nominations for the Young Lawyer of the Year Award, given annually to a young lawyer for his or her contributions to the community and/or the legal profession in South Carolina. Do you know someone that deserves to be recognized? Nominate by April 2.
Free domestic violence CLE
YLD's Voices Against Violence Committee is hosting a free CLE titled "Domestic Violence: What Every Attorney Should Know" on Friday, Feb. 3, that will address the civil and criminal aspects of domestic violence representation, as well as ethical considerations. While this CLE is free to attend, all attendees must commit to representing two pro bono clients in Order of Protection actions. GAL study report released
The report of the Guardian ad Litem Study Committee has been released. The General Assembly included a proviso in the present budget to undertake the study. The report notes that the present statewide GAL system (which covers all counties except Richland) served over 10,000 children in fiscal year 2010-11 and accepted 100 percent of the cases filed by DSS. The Committee proposes creation of a Division of Guardian ad Litem to oversee both the present program and GALs appointed in private custody and visitation disputes. The report can be found here.
