The University of South Carolina School of Law anticipates an opening for a full-time, non-tenure-track Legal Writing Instructor, to begin in August 2014. The Instructor positions are full-time, and Instructors may receive five-year contracts after a probationary period of five one-year contracts. These positions are not designed to be stepping stones to tenure-track positions but can be very rewarding for people who genuinely enjoy working with students. Each Instructor will be responsible for approximately 40 students each year and will work closely with a reference librarian who will team-teach the Legal Research, Analysis & Writing course with the Legal Writing Instructor.
Legal Writing Instructor positions are not compatible with the continuation of law practice, even part-time, during the academic year; teachers will be expected to focus all of their time and energy on their students. The initial 9-month salary for an Instructor with no full-time teaching experience would be $57,500; an Instructor with full-time teaching experience could start at up to $60,000. Legal Writing Instructors also have the option to teach a writing-oriented elective course in the summer for a $10,000 stipend.
The ideal candidate will have a J.D.; a record of outstanding academic achievement in law school; excellent analytical, research, writing, and interpersonal skills; at least two years of experience in law practice; teaching or tutoring experience; astounding patience; and an abiding sense of humor. Candidates should also demonstrate a passionate commitment to teaching legal writing, which involves significant student interaction and line-by-line evaluation of approximately a thousand pages of student writing each year.
