About the Seminar

This program qualifies for 6.0 MCLE credit hours, 6.0 MJCLE credit hours for Probate Judges and 6.0 Estate Planning & Probate Specialty Credit hours.

Greenville County Probate Judge Debora Faulkner and Columbia attorney Cathy Kennedy have put together an outstanding agenda and truly excellent faculty to bring you a seminar that will provide you with practical, up-to-date, and cutting edge instruction on the hottest topics in Probate Court for 2013.

  • Lt. Governor Glenn McConnell on the services for our State’s seniors provided by his office.
  • Court of Appeals Judge Aphrodite Konduros will explain and analyze the various statutory and case law provisions for awarding attorneys’ fees in Probate Court.
  • Ken Wingate will tackle the tricky issues surrounding estate taxes and planning with portability.
  • Judge Debora Faulkner will provide insights on the role of the Probate Court under the terms of a brand new S.C. law (National Instant Check System, or NICS), which aims to stop purchases of guns by persons adjudicated as “mental defectives.”

After lunch, you will hear from a panel of judges and practitioners as they explore the tricks, traps, and solutions to problems that arise when Probate Court and Family Court collides. In addition, we are honored to have Dr. Sewell Kahn to speak on end of life issues and how they impact your elder law and probate practice.

The day ends with important presentations by Cathy Kennedy on the complications and solutions for delayed probate situations, and with Prof. Alan Medlin’s annual case law and statutory update. Prof. Medlin will focus his presentation on highlights of the new Probate Code.

As always, this special CLE program is mandatory for S.C.’s Probate Judges, so if you are an attorney who practices in the Probate Courts, be sure that you don’t miss this unique learning and networking opportunity!
